While I'm about as far from religious as you can get, I do find the phenomenon fascinating - and frankly kind of disturbing at times. However, I have spent a LOT of time noodling about it.

Now I've finally come up with a thesis that begins to actually satisfy me regarding the probable origin of this decidedly unique and unusual human behavior.
